Mastercam 9
I have recently just purchased a new pc for my desk. Which has windows 7 professional on it. The problem i am having is i am running mastercam 9 after i loaded the software on to my new pc and plug the hasp in. when i start the software it comes up with a warning hasp not found box. i was just wondering if anyone on here had any idea what i have to do to make my old version of master cam work on a new computer.

Jason J,
I'm curious as to whether Mastercam 9 will run on your new computer. I could not get it to run on either of the two new computers that we purchased here. (Wasn't a SIM isuue; the program would 'lock up' for several seconds with each mouse click.) My 'computer guy' told me that some of the older DOS based programs will not work with the newer processors.
We upgraded to X4, which after 6 months of daily use, I still don't like as well as V9. - Plastic

dos
That was a statement made by one of the Mastercam guys at westec last year. That the MC9 won't work on the newer systems as they lack the DOS support that XP has.
Don't know if that is true today.

Not real familiar with Windows 7 but I suspect it's the 64 bit thing thats giving you the trouble. Check to see if you possibly have a compatibility mode setting. I have 9 loaded on XP, works well although, once I went to X and used it for a while I doubt I'll ever go back to 9, I find it a bit clumsy to use now.

Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate editions have a feature called Windows XP mode. Its actually a virtual machine that emulates a windows xp pc.

FWIW, I could not get MC9 to run on either of two different computers, both 32 bit, and both running XP. This was in November, 2009.
I wouldn't even think of running MC9 on a 64 bit system running Windows 7. - Stainless

Just a WAG, but try running in xp mode, in the properties menu, set the compatibility to windows 2000, and 256 colors.... maybe??? I got it to run with vista that way

Time to learn.
Jason, you graduated college but you're 'bound and determined to make 9 work...'. You're kidding right? Is it even a legal copy? That program is old - very old. To get ahead one needs to keep abreast (or at least withing a couple years) of current technology. You're doing yourself a huge disservice in not moving forward. You are part of the future. Maybe try a different cam package?Originally Posted by Jason Jbucktruck, no i have not got it to work yet it is still giving me the same hasp not found mesg. Btw, I'm not hating, but every time I read about American manufacturing falling behind and I read a post such as this - it frustrates me.

I agree with your above statement; in fact, that is why I upgraded to X4 (legal copy, BTW).
But the fact remains that X4 is just not as intuitive of a program to use as V9. Maybe it's because I learned Cadkey nearly 20 years ago, and Mastercam is based on the same kernel. FWIW, I did online training through Mastercam Training and Certification online now! (very good program, BTW) so I did not go into X4 blind. I could go into details as to what I don't like about X4, but perhaps that is for another thread.
One more possibility just dawned on me, though: I'm getting old and cranky - Plastic

Bill T, yes it is a legal copy of mc9. It is old technology but i work in a small shop and we only use it once or twice aweek if that, so its not really worth spending a ton of money on new software when mc9 works for what we do!Originally Posted by BillTJason, you graduated college but you're 'bound and determined to make 9 work...'. Think broader... Maybe a low cost CAM upgrade?
Yes, you represent a very common scenario: Small shop, no money, and a perceived non need. You will find a way to get MC9 working but look at this as an opportunity to advance.Originally Posted by Jason JBill T, yes it is a legal copy of mc9. That said, I think their are some low cost packages that have the same abilities as MC9 but with room to grow and an up to date user interface. MC9 was released way back in 2002 for Dos machines. That's a LONG time in software years. Most of the features it has I'm sure are common place on the entry level systems of today. The other thing is looking at the ROI of an upgraded system. Could it help the shops bottom line? Could it bring in some work you'd otherwise pass on? Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
Here's some anecdotal info: Ever wonder why all the new cool cutting tools out today come in metric sizing? That's because Europe is much more progressive in that technology. It's up to us keep up.
Just off hand (I think they have free demos):
Alibre, Inc. - Alibre CAM Software - Professional, Affordable, Integrated CAD/CAM
SESCOI:CAD/CAM the premier automatic toolpath generation software
Perhaps others can jump in here with some affordable cam ideas?

I was using v8 on a pentium 2 400mhz computer a long time ago with windows98. It was kinda slow for 3d stuff but worked good for everything else. If your still having trouble install it on an older computer. No need for a super fast 64 bit system to run old software in a dos window.

1) Call masterCam for support.Originally Posted by Jason JBill T, yes it is a legal copy of mc9. It is old technology but i work in a small shop and we only use it once or twice aweek if that, so its not really worth spending a ton of money on new software when mc9 works for what we do!
2) Run the 'XP Virtual Machine' for older 32bit programs on your Windows 7 64bit OS
3) Get a deadicated PC with XP Service Pack 1 and keep your PC off the network...
